Galore

Everyone knows that 'galore' means 'in abundance', but have you ever wondered where the word comes from? According to the OED, it is first cited in the language from 1675 and at first was colloquial until it became Standard English from c. 1890. It derives from the Gaelic go leor, which means 'in sufficiency' and not quite the meaning that it has today. Gaelic is an old Celtic language, versions of which were, and still are, spoken by the Scots and Irish. Sir Walter Scott is credited with popularising the word in his widely read novels during the 19th century.
