Gaffer

According to the OED, gaffer is British informal, and is a contraction of the word 'godfather', dating from the late 16th century. (Other sources maintain it is a contraction of 'grandfather'.) It was originally a term of respect, but has since been watered down to its present informal meaning of supervisor, foreman, headman, or boss, which date from the mid-19th century.
