Frisbee

Back in the late 19th century, US college students were throwing empty, circular pie tins made by the Frisbie Baking Company of Connecticut. They were still doing this in 1948 when Walter Morrison and Warren Franscioni created a plastic version, which they named the Pluto Platter and sold it at country fairs. In 1955, they sold out to Arthur Melin and Richard Knerr the inventors of the Hula Hoop. In 1958, the new owners re-named the toy, Frisbee, in recognition of its roots and sold over 100 million Frisbees before selling out to the Mattel Toy Company in 1994.
