Freelance/Freelancer
One who works at set or hourly rates rather than employed fulltime. It was originally written as two words and was coined by Sir Walter Scott in his novel Ivanhoe in 1819. It was used by Scott to describe mercenary medieval knights and is often interpreted wrongly as an expression that derives from medieval times.
