Fork out/over

British informal for to pay out or give over dates from the early 19th century and derives from the manual labour of working with an agricultural or garden fork. To fork out, meaning to throw out, as with a fork, dates from the early 17th century and this throwing out of the money is the origin of the current informal expression.
