For crying out loud

Origin of: For crying out loud

For crying out loud

This is what is known as a minced oath or euphemism for ‘for Christ’s sake’ used to express annoyance or impatience. Although now prevalent on both sides of the Atlantic, the expression is originally American from the early 20th century and has been attributed to Thomas Aloysius Dorgan, the cartoonist, (1877-1929).
