Find/finding one's feet

To find one's feet means to get accustomed to a new situation, a new environment, or a new skill or pastime. It derives from the concept of an animal or human being learning to take the first steps in learning to walk. As such, it is believed to be fairly ancient, with some sources maintaining that its idiomatic meaning dates from at least the 1500s.
