Field day

To have a field day is to enjoy oneself or excel in a brilliant and exciting manner and in this figurative sense dates from the early 19th century. The original field days, however, were military exercises and were commonplace during the 1700s. Field in this sense is short for battlefield, which usage dates from the late 14th century.
