Fickle Finger of fate

The unpredictable and capricious nature of chance or fate, an Americanism popular in college circles during the 1930s. Sometimes the alliteration is extended coarsely to ‘fucked by the fickle finger of fate’ an expression which became popular in the US military during World War II.
