Fever pitch

A state of extreme agitation, excitement or intensity, the expression dates from the mid-19th century. Pitch is used here in the sense of a high level, a usage that dates from the mid-1500s. The fever part is an obvious allusion to the agitation or restlessness displayed when in a fevered or feverish state.
