Fat is in the fire

The fat is in the fire is an ancient expression that is first found in English in John Heywood Proverbs (1546). It obviously derives from the way fat can flare up in a fire. In early usage, it meant a design or plan that had irremediably failed. Now it is more generally used when some injudicious act provokes a violent explosion of anger.
