Fall/Land in butter

To fall or to land in butter, or a tub of butter, is an expression that means to be lucky or fortunate in the sense of being able to enjoy the finer things or the luxuries of life. For a slightly more crude version, In America one is likely to fall or land with one's butt or ass in the butter, whereas in other parts of the English-speaking world, it is more likely to be one's bum in the butter. The various forms of the expression were not heard in America or the rest of the English-speaking world before the mid-19th century, but there is evidence that butter as a metaphor for luxury or good fortune is considerably older. For example, in the Bible Job 29: 6, Job recalls better days when his feet or steps 'were bathed in butter.'
