Fall from grace

Origin of: Fall from grace

Fall from grace

To fall from grace is to lose esteem and derives from the allusion to the fall of man in Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve fell from the grace of God, which of course is the theme of Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667). Although the actual words fall from grace do not appear in Genesis, it is generally acknowledged as the source. St Paul uses the actual words in Galatians 5:4, “Christ is become of no effect unto you; whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.”
