Enfant terrible

Origin of: Enfant terrible

Enfant terrible

The literal translation of the French phrase is terrible child but since the mid-19th century it has been used in a figurative sense for an outspoken, rebellious or controversial person. For example, Andy Warhol is considered by some to be the enfant terrible of modern art. The origin is from a series of children sketches by the French caricaturist Paul Garni titled Les Enfants Terribles published between 1846 and 1848.
