Egghead

An intellectual or boffin an Americanism dates from the 1950s from the association of being highbrow or high-browed, which is also American from the late 19th/early 20th century for superior intellectual capacity. It derives from the allusion (or perhaps illusion) that people with high brows or large foreheads possessed more brains.
