Easel

An interesting word, dates from the early 17th century, and derives from the Dutch ezel and the German esel meaning ass or donkey. Hence, a four-legged frame or structure that does the donkey work in supporting something, like a painting canvas or a blackboard. In this sense, it is similar to the word clotheshorse.
