Earmark

To earmark is to stamp or mark ownership of something. The origin is early 16th century and refers to marks on the ears of sheep or cattle to signify ownership. By the end of the 16th century, its use was extended beyond livestock to mark ownership of virtually anything. To earmark or reserve something for some future use or purpose is the modern figurative usage and is first attested from the late 19th century.
