Drop someone a line

Why do we use the word drop in the construction of this everyday expression? It becomes obvious, however, as soon as we think of the phrase ‘drop a letter in the post’. The origin is the act of dropping, literally, a letter or a note in the post or letterbox. The expression has been in use since the mid-17th century.
