Drop / dropping like flies

Like flies' means 'in large numbers' and dates from the late 16th/early 17th century. To 'drop like flies' dates from around the same time and means to fall ill or die in large numbers, and is also used figuratively meaning to withdraw or drop out of some contest or activity in large numbers.
