Drift

Drift as in to get someone’s drift dates from the early 16th century. Drift here means current or flow and is used figuratively to mean the conscious direction of speech, meaning, or intention. Shakespeare uses the expression in this latter sense in Much Ado About Nothing c. 1598, Act II, Scene I, “I will tell you my drift.”
