Origin of: Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks are the rope-like strands of hair formed by matting and braiding. The word 'dreadlocks' is modern and is first cited in the 1960s, but why the 'dread' part? Some sources maintain that hair braided in this way, and worn by Mau Mau insurgents in Kenya, instilled fear and dread into British soldiers. Other sources maintain that the origin is Rastafarian and signifies fear or dread of the Lord God. None of these etymological origins are proven. What is indisputable is that the practice of wearing hair in this way dates back to many different, ancient cultures and religions, including Ancient Egyptian culture, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Hair braided in this way, therefore, is not exclusive to African/Caribbean culture.
