D’Oyly Carte

D’Oyle Carte is the surname of Richard D’Oyle Carte who founded the D’Oyly Carte theatre company that made Gilbert & Sullivan operettas famous. Irreverently, it is also rhyming slang for fart, D’Oyly Carte/fart, which dates from the mid-20th century. Not to be confused with doily.
