Dotty

Dotty meaning mad or silly is a very old word dating from the 14th century. It comes from a now archaic word dottypoll where poll is the Old English word for head from which we still have poleaxe, which was literally a head axe. Thus, dottypoll meant silly head from which we derive the word dotty.
