Doom and gloom

Doom and gloom is a rhyming couple that describes feelings of despondency or the forecast of bad tidings, especially in a financial or political context. It first began to be used in American newspapers from around 1875, and soon became popular because of its rhyming. These days, it has become something of a cliché.
