This is the more colloquial version of the Biblical “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” that appears in Leviticus 19:18 and elsewhere. This maxim, however, is much older than its Biblical expression. From the mid-17th century, it became known as the Golden Rule and is based on the fundamental ethic of reciprocity, which can be found in almost every ancient culture and civilisation from time immemorial. Therefore, no definitive origin or source can be offered with complete certainty.
