Ding-dong

A reduplicated word imitative of course of the sound of bells; dates from the late 16th century. Its figurative use as in a ding-dong battle or contest stems from the continual reciprocity of ringing bells and implies vigorously maintained. This latter usage, according to the OED, dates from the mid-19th century.
