Decimate

The word derives from the Latin decimus, meaning a tenth and derives from the punishment for Roman legions performing badly in battle, which was decimation i.e. one man in every ten was put to death. Since the 17th century, however, the word has been used loosely but acceptably to mean the killing or slaughter of a great number.
