Deadline

Meaning a set time limit is from US newspaper jargon from around 1920. The origin is thought to come from US military prisons during the American Civil War (1861-65) where lines were drawn at a certain distance within the makeshift walls of prison compounds. Prisoners were not allowed to go beyond these lines and prison guards were under orders to shoot any prisoner that stepped over them. Hence, they soon became known as deadlines.
