Dead as a dodo

The flightless bird, the dodo, from the Portuguese doudo meaning simpleton and now extinct, was last seen on the island of Mauritius during the late 17th century. Lewis Carroll featured a dodo in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and the expression became popular thereafter meaning unequivocally dead or extinct.
