Daylight robbery

This expression has only been around since the early 20th century and therefore has nothing to do with the window tax imposed by William III in 1696, as is often supposed. Daylight robbery is simply what is suggested by the phrase, a robbery that takes place in broad daylight; hence its figurative meaning as a blatant over-charging for goods or services.
