Dashboard

Originally a wooden board or a leather strip placed horizontally in front of the driver and passengers of a horse-drawn vehicle to prevent dashes or splashes of mud or water thrown up by the horses’ hooves. Dates from the early 19th century, and was later applied to motor vehicles, commonly abbreviated to 'dash' from the early 20th century.
