Darkest Africa

The coining of darkest Africa is attributed to none other than Henry Morton Stanley the American journalist and adventurer who is perhaps most famous for finding the explorer Dr David Livingstone at Ujiji on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, 10 November 1871, and greeting him with words, “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” The phrase ‘the dark continent’ is also attributed to Stanley. In 1878, Stanley published a book called Through the Dark Continent relating his travels through Africa. This was followed in 1890 by another book entitled In Darkest Africa.
