'Cut from the same cloth

'This phrase when used figuratively means that people or entities, when compared, share the same characteristics. The allusion, of course, is to tailoring. When garments are made from the same bolt of cloth, they may well be stylistically different, but because they are made from the same fabric, they will essentially share some similarities. The exact date of the first figurative usage is not known, but it has been in use from about the late 19th century.
