Since time immemorial, a violent argument might have ended in real swordplay, but even as a figurative expression where to have words with someone was to either draw or cross swords, it is very ancient. Earliest known mention is the Bible, Psalms 55:21. “His words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.”
