Creature comforts

Origin of: Creature comforts

Creature comforts

All those things in life that make us, as creatures, comfortable and happy, like a safe, cosy home, good food, warmth, hot water for bathing etc. Merriam-Webster dates the origin of the expression from 1652. Other sources maintain it was coined by Mathew Henry (1672-1714) an English , non-conformist minister, who was famous for his Biblical Commentaries. In one of them, on Psalm 37, he wrote about 'creature comforts' but he may have been quoting a phrase that was already in use, as opposed to coining it himself.
