Crackerjack

First class, state of the art, an American expression dates from 1893 but has links to the very much older meanings of crack, cracking or cracker (see cracked up to be). How can one be so precise in terms of the 1893 date? The answer is that Cracker Jack (two words) is an American brand name for a popcorn-peanut-molasses snack food that was introduced at the first Chicago World Fair in 1893. People liked it so much that they instantly agreed that it was indeed ‘Crackerjack’ and so the expression was born. The Cracker Jack brand is still alive and well and is now owned by Frito-Lay.
