Cobber

Australian slang for a friend or mate dates from the late 19th century and one source says it perhaps derives from Suffolk dialect cob meaning to take a liking to someone or something. It was widely used by Australian soldiers during WWI but had fallen out of common usage by the 1940s. Rarely heard these days, it has been replaced by the word mate.
