Close call

A narrow escape means much the same thing as close shave and is also of American origin but dates from the late 19th century and derives from sports where a referee or umpire’s decision is known as a call. Too close to call also dates from around the same time, late 19th century, and refers to a game or contest so evenly matched that the outcome is difficult to predict.
