Clodhopper

An awkward, clumsy, boorish person dates from the late 1600s when clodhopper was slang for a ploughman, one who literally hops on clods of earth behind the plough. The word clod is in fact a Middle English variant of the much older Old English word clot for a clot (or clod) of earth. Clot signifying a dull, stupid or clumsy person dates from the 1400s. It is still used in phrases like clumsy clot.
