Claret

A word that derives from Old French vin claret, (Modern French clairet) for light red wine dates from The Middle Ages and now generally applied to red wine from Bordeaux. From c.1600, it became colloquial for blood and from the late 18th century was generally confined to boxing although these days it is also heard when blood sometimes flows during a rugby game.
