Chav

A term for low class youth is British slang from the early 21st century. The word is thought to derive from Romany chavi meaning child. The Sunday Telegraph defined chav as follows. “The non-respectable working classes: the dole-scroungers, petty criminals, football hooligans and teenage pram-pushers.” Spurious etymology that it is an acronym for council housed and violent has also become quite popular.
