Chauvinist

Today, this word seems to be reserved for male chauvinists, men who denigrate or doubt the abilities of women from a sexist point of view. In its wider and original context, chauvinism means exaggerated or bellicose patriotism and derives from Nicholas Chauvin, a veteran soldier from the Napoleonic era, whose demonstrative patriotism was later popularised in Cogniard’s vaudeville La Cocarde Tricolore in 1831.
