Caught flat-footed

To be caught flat-footed means to be caught unprepared and therefore to be at a disadvantage. The expression is originally American and dates from the first decade of the 20th century. All the evidence points to its origin from being caught flat-footed or unprepared in baseball. See also on the back foot.
