Canter

A leisurely, easy pace usually of horses; dates from the early 18th century. The word is actually a shortening of ‘Canterbury Gallop’ or ‘Canterbury Trot’, expressions that date from the 1600s and which described the pace at which Canterbury pilgrims would usually ride. See also at a canter.
