Camp

Origin of: Camp

Camp

Homosexual, effeminate, theatrical behaviour or speech dates from the 1920s. It is thought to derive from the erstwhile practice of homosexual males opting for camping weekends and holidays as discreet ways to pursue relationships. The word became very popular in theatrical circles during the 1960s and the expression camp as a row of tents dates from around that time and, perhaps by accident, makes reference to the original homosexual practice of camping weekends and holidays.
