Bury one’s head in the sand

Origin of: Bury one’s head in the sand

Bury one’s head in the sand

This expression meaning to refuse to confront or acknowledge a problem has been around since the early 17th century and comes from the mistaken belief that ostriches hide their heads in sand when confronted by danger. This mistaken belief has also given rise to another, namely that ostriches are stupid creatures when in fact all birds, including ostriches, have much larger brains than most animals.
