Broker

This is a very old word dating from the 15th century. Its root is Anglo-Norman French brocour meaning a small trader or tradesman. Broker in the sense of an agent or intermediary is from the early 16th century. There is some evidence that the origin of this word may be connected to the Old French broche meaning a spit but this remains unproven. See also Broach the subject.
