Bridegroom

This word has nothing to do with groom as in grooming horses. The second syllable derives from on Old English word guma, from at least the 11th century, meaning man. Thus a brideguma was the bride’s man and over time it simply became groom. It remains a pure coincidence that this is also the name for a horse attendant.
