Bread and butter

‘Bread and butter’ is a basic foodstuff and as such it became a metaphor for one’s livelihood or source of income. This metaphoric, idiomatic meaning is originally American, dating from c. 1820, but was soon exported to Britain and the rest of the English-speaking world by the mid-19th century.
