Brass hat

Brass hat, top brass and big brass mean more or less the same thing. It is British slang for a high-ranking military officer. It dates from the 19th century and derives its origin from the amount of gold braid on the hats of senior military officers. While brass hat refers more correctly to military officers, top brass and big brass are more aptly descriptive of civilian authority.
